Update, 11:20 a.m. Friday: It’s official.
The Rangers have traded infielder Jurickson Profar to the Oakland Athletics as part of a three-team deal that involved the Tampa Bay Rays, the club announced Friday.
Also departing the Texas organization is minor-league right-hander Rollie Lacy, acquired from the Chicago Cubs this summer in the Cole Hamels trade, who will be joining the Rays.
The Rangers received four players in the deal: left-handed pitchers Kyle Bird and Brock Burke and righty Yoel Espinal from Tampa Bay, and infielder Eli White from Oakland. Additionally, the Rangers will receive international slot compensation from Oakland.
Bird and Burke will be placed on the Rangers’ major-league roster, bringing that total to 36 out of 40 possible players.
More to come on this developing story.
Original story, 10:04 a.m. Friday: Jurickson Profar’s time as a Texas Ranger has apparently come to an end.
The Rangers and Oakland Athletics have agreed to a deal that will send infielder Jurickson Profar to the A’s, sources told SportsDay’s Evan Grant.
The news was first reported by Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan.
He has restored his value as an everyday player. He’s also now two years from free agency and the chance of him signing an extension seem remote, at best. And as slim as those chances are, slimmer still may be the chances of him being part of a playoff-contending team in Texas. Daniels seems to know this.
Perhaps the biggest factor the Rangers must consider is not “if” they will trade Profar, but “when.” Right now, there are multiple options for shortstop/third basemen on the free agent market and multiple teams seeking them. Manny Machado has more value. So may Mike Moustakas. At the trade deadline, the available pool of talent may be much smaller; then again, so maybe the group of teams seeking them. Also, barring injury, teams tend to seek pitching or power bats at the trade deadline.
Profar in 2018 posted a .254 batting average with 20 home runs, 77 RBIs and 82 runs across 146 games, all career-best marks.
